A fuse link is usually made up of a fusible alloy strip or wire which is attached to two connectors or terminals. These connectors are then inserted into a fuse holder in an electric circuit or used as a trigger mechanism for an appropriate safety device. If over current flows through a device, the fuse link is designed to blow which essentially stops the flow of electricity through the circuit. The fuse acts as a bridge, and so once the fuse blows the flow of electricity in the circuit is stopped thereby protecting the circuit.
Low voltage fuses commonly include varieties such as cartridge, blade, bolted and bottle fuses. High voltage fuses are used to protect transformers and often feature a ferrule or cartridge style body. Many of these fuses feature an indicator or striker to alert a blown fuse.
The most common HRC fuse link types are DIN NH blade fuses, British Standard BS88 fuses and American or European cartridge fuses. NH HRC fuses are identifiable from their rectangular ceramic casing enclosed by a cover plate that features a metal blade style terminal on each end and are used in applications from protection of motors to solar PV and battery systems.
BS88 fuses are usually used in a wide variety of electrical circuits and typically feature a cylindrical ceramic casing with two metal tags or lugs designed to fix the fuse into a fuse holder using bolts. American standard HRC fuses are available as cartridge fuses or bolt down tag type fuses. European HRC fuses are also available in cartridge or bolt down tag versions. The ceramic body may be cylindrical, bottle shaped, square or rectangular depending on the fuse.
