The ACH580 is a high-performance variable-speed drive with a variety of dependable embedded communications including BACnet MS/TP, Modbus RTU, and N2. There are also Fieldbus adapter modules available that can be used with all compatible platforms.
In this Tech Tip, we'll go over how to quickly configure an embedded BACnet Fieldbus communication in ABB's ACH580's Primary and Parameters Menus.
A specific communication protocol designed for building automation and control applications is BACnet, allowing interoperability among different equipment vendors regardless of the building service they provide. It enables a wide range of devices to exchange information and data with a diverse set of suppliers.
Beginning BACnet communication via the Primary Menu:
1. To start the Fieldbus communications, begin from the Main Menu and select Primary Settings and then select Communication; Main Menu→ Primary Settings → Communication
2. In Communication, select Embedded Fieldbus and Communication Setup; Embedded Fieldbus → Communication Setup
3. Select EFB Selection and then select BACnet MS/TP and press Save; EFB Selection→ BACnet MS/TP Press Save
4. Set up BACnet MS/TP parameters according to application in Communication Setup; Embedded Fieldbus→ Communication Setup
5. Once parameters are set, apply settings for parameters to validate your settings by scrolling down and select Apply Settings to Embedded Fieldbus; Communication Setup → Apply Settings to Embedded Fieldbus
Starting BACnet fieldbus communication in the parameter’s menu:
- 1.Turn on the drive.
- Turn on Protocol 01 This turns on/off the embedded fieldbus interface and selects the protocol, which is: MSTP BACnet (2)
- Protocol ID 02 This is a read-only parameter that displays your protocol. ID
- Node Address 58.03 Specifies the drive's node address on the fieldbus link. It should be noted that two addresses on the same line are not permitted. The range of possible values is 1 to 247.
- Baud Rate 58.04 Select the fieldbus link's baud rate.
- Parity 58.04 Determine the required parity and stop bit count.
- Device Object ID58.40, the Device Object ID must be unique across all BACnet devices in the building network for BACnet MSTP. The valid values range from 0 to 4194303, with the default Device object ID 4194303 being invalid according to BACnet specifications.
- Communication Control 58.06, validate all drive settings and apply changed EFB configuration settings under: (1) Refresh Settings to return to normal operation; Enabled (0)
