Firmware Service Pack / Recovery Pack installation

For those that operate ABB’s ACS880, you may have experienced a fault or warning explaining you need a recovery or service pack installation. In this Tech Tip, we will show you the steps you will need to take to rectify the situation.

If your memory unit is empty or contains incompatible or corrupted firmware, then your drive will be displaying fault ‘FB14’ on the keypad, or it may display L or U on the seven-segment display of the control unit such as the ‘ZMU’.

How to prevent the fault

To get your drive quickly and conveniently up to date with the latest service packs, download the free Drive composer tool from the ABB website here: https://new.abb.com/drives/software-tools/drive-composer

ABB Drive composer is a start-up and maintenance software for ABB drives, which is used to view and set drive parameters, monitor, take local control of the drive from the PC, and event logging. The Drive composer is available as a free or paid ‘Pro’ version.

What the ‘entry’ Drive Composer offers is enough to run a drive and monitor it. It could also be used to install the latest service packs for the drive.

In addition to the features of entry-level Drive Composer, the Pro version includes control diagrams, fast monitoring, working with multiple drives on the PC tool network, macro script editing for parameters, and much more.

Once you have downloaded the Drive composer, you are ready for the update. Ensure that your laptop is powered up and connected to the power adaptor, before starting the work and during the downloading and installation process.

Your drive needs to be equipped with a keypad ACS-AP-I or assistant keypad ACS-AP-W. You can use an Ethernet cable to connect the keypad to the drive, otherwise, you can just mount the keypad into its holder on the drive. Connect the USB cable (USB A to USB mini) to your laptop, as well as to the keypad on the drive. 

 
Make sure the ACS880 is powered, or keypad is powered with external 24VDC XPOW connection during the downloading and installation process. Also, make sure that the drive is not in operation and cannot be started. Recovery and Service pack updates can only be done when the ACS880 drive is not running.

Now you are ready to start the Drive composer on your laptop. The tool will automatically recognise if your drive needs a service pack update.

Click on the recommended service pack and choose if you wish to make a backup and follow the guided instructions.

FB14 fault can be prevented by downloading the FB14 Service pack to the ACS880 drive currently not displaying FB14, then FB14 will never occur in the future. This should be done to all ZMU-02 memory units with FW older than v2.71 

 
Once the update is ready, it is recommended that the details of the update are reported back to the ABB server, so the information of your drive stays up to date for future reference. 



If you don’t have an internet connection available, the data will be sent forward when the Drive composer is opened the next time.

The entire update will take less than 10 minutes to be completed.

How to recover from an active fault

While the Service pack is used to prevent the fault to come again, the Recovery pack is used to recover the ACS880 already at fault. For a drive displaying FB14 fault, the Drive Composer may not be able to connect, so the ZMU will need the recovery pack installation to regain communication.
ABB Drive loader is a tool, which is used to download the Firmware to the drive. To allow the Drive Loader to operate properly, you will need to have the Drive Composer Entry or Drive Composer Pro already installed on your PC to install the necessary USB drivers.
