A manual bypass switch is beneficial as it allows service and isolation for safety purposes without loss of power to the load. Conventionally, bypass switches are built by using individual switch disconnectors and conversion kits. ABB’s manual bypass switch solution consists of one single device without conversion kits which saves installation space and cost. Safe maintenance of equipment while the load is being supplied directly from the source is achieved as ABB’s bypass switches fulfill isolating requirements without additional devices thus ensuring safety and dependability.
How is a Bypass Switch different from a Switch Disconnector?
In simple terms, a bypass switch redirects power to the load by isolating the relevant branch of the electrical circuitry for service and maintenance whereas a switch disconnector shuts off power completely. A switch disconnector is used to disconnect or isolate an entire or specific part of an electric circuit in case of faults from the main power supply for maintenance purposes. It doesn’t interrupt any current, nor does it redirect current.
How does the process of bypassing the supply take place?
The process of bypassing the supply to the load can be done by two types of available transitions, namely open transition and closed transition. A closed transition is also called a ‘make before break’ transition, where the two power sources (utility and backup) are momentarily overlapped to limit the brief falter in power during transfer (I-I+II-II). An open transition on the other hand is called ‘break before make’ transition, where there is momentary disconnection from the two power sources (utility and backup) before transfer (I-0-II)

ABB manual bypass switches come equipped with a comprehensive range of inbuilt safety features such as mechanical interlock. The switches are manually operated, and the range goes from 160 to 800 Amperes, compliant with globally recognized standards (IEC 60947-3). ABB’s manual bypass switches are available in 4 pole open and closed transition. Its black plastic IP65 pistol handle and pistol handle extension ensure smooth manual operation and leaves a small footprint. The closed transition switches have overlapping contacts and optional bridging bars. The handle extension is snap on mounted on the standard handle for manual operation. when padlocking the standard handle, the handle extension needs to be removed for safety purposes. Inferring, handle is padlockable in the 0-position, door interlocking is possible in the I- and II-positions and when padlocked.
