The ABB AbilityTM Smart Sensors offer an innovative solution for monitoring critical equipment and detecting potential issues before they escalate. With these sensors, customers can monitor critical equipment parameters, including temperature, vibration, and other factors, to detect early warning signs of wear or damage. This early detection helps maintenance teams take corrective actions before severe damage occurs. The data extracted from a smart sensor is available for users to access on the ABB Smart Sensor portal. This portal offers a user-friendly interface, accessible from any device with internet capability to provide maintenance teams with real-time data to make informed maintenance decisions.


The IPD team recently investigated a customer site that had been experiencing multiple motor and bearing failures. The findings revealed that the leading cause of the failures was the lack of maintenance on their power transmission equipment. Following our team’s recommendation, the ABB AbilityTM Smart Sensors were installed on the customer’s critical equipment as part of a trial. This allowed the maintenance team to easily interact with the sensors using their mobile phones' Bluetooth connectivity and collect data through the ABB Smart Sensor portal. The portal provided the customer with reliable data to track their maintenance schedule and focus on the machines that required more attention. By deploying the Smart Sensor range, the customer was able to reduce downtime and improve site efficiency while saving costs on additional investments in motors and bearings. The customer was pleased with the results, approving the ABB Smart Sensors for rollout to additional sites. The IPD team have offered supply, technical support, and service for the national rollout, which is a significant achievement for all parties involved. 


This successful rollout of ABB’s Smart Sensors has demonstrated the effectiveness of proactive maintenance to prevent equipment failure and downtime. By leveraging the latest sensor technology and data analysis tools, our customer was able to improve site efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance their overall maintenance program. With our ongoing support and service, we look forward to helping our customer maintain their equipment and prevent unplanned downtime in the future.
