Designed to offer high protection and trustworthy operation in critical power applications, distribution boards, switchboards and capacitor banks, IPD offers ABB’s EasyLine XLP range of DIN Disconnectors.

What is a DIN Disconnector?

A DIN Disconnector is a switching device used for manual switching or isolation of loads and distribution boards. It can make, carry, and break the specified rated current including a defined overload. It protects downstream electrical loads, safely disconnecting all poles from the power supply under load. The DIN Disconnector has combined properties of switch/disconnector along with the overload and short circuit protection offered by fuses links.

The easiest and most cost-effective way to combine fuse holders and disconnectors, is the DIN Disconnector. The removable fuse carrier, which also contains the fuse links, provides when open provides the isolating distance to allows safe maintenance work to be carried out on the circuit. Following an overload or a short circuit on the circuit, the fuse links can be easily and quickly replaced to get the circuit back online with a minimum of fuss.

Why use Fuse link protection?

In simple terms, fuse links are easy to use and extremely reliable.

Fuse links due to their design are a current limiting device, reducing the let through energy on the down-stream network. Fuse links also provide very high short circuit protection, NH DIN type 120kA, BS88 80kA. With this high fault level protection and tested for compliance with EN 60947.3 Standard, XLP DIN Disconnectors can be safety placed anywhere in a network to provide back-up protection.

Fuse links are very simple to provide co-ordination between upstream and downstream to obtain full discrimination in the network. So long as the downstream fuse total let through energy in below the upstream fuse pre arcing then full discrimination is achieved. This is typically at a ration of 1 : 1.6. This means complicated curves and analysis is not required when using fuse links. Moreover, feeders can be added to an installation to increase its power capacity without altering its current design or requiring new selectivity calculations.

Low-cost installation

Fuse links provide very high fault levels and are a cost-effective solution to the protection of distribution networks. With fuse link systems, plant downtime and maintenance are significantly decreased as the fuse links can be quickly and easily replaced. Once the fuse link is replaced the circuit is back to 100% as originally designed.

Fuse links are a fully contained over current protection device as quartz filled fuse link body does not allow the any arcs or gas emissions to be released under operation. The amount of let-through energy (I2t) present at a short circuit, determines the dynamic load placed on the network and its hardware. In comparison to other options, the fuse link offers the best protection at high short-circuit currents. Once more, this results in reduced strain on the network and greater levels of personal safety.

Implementing fuse protection is beneficial for the following reasons:

  • Economical installation
  • Simple and affordable selectivity
  • Simple to provide discrimination.
  • Easy and fast to replace back to 100% protection
  • No moving components
  • Very fast operating time
  • No gas emissions during short circuits, 100% contained

Why ABB EasyLine – XLP DIN Disconnectors?

There are 1, 2, 3, and 4 pole options in the EasyLine family, with ratings ranging from 100A to 630A. The 1-pole and 2-pole ranges are also rated for DC voltage, while all units are suitable for AC voltage.

The 3-pole variant ranges from size 00 to size 3 (160A - 630A), which can be utilised as a single device and is designed to be installed quickly and easily in distribution systems, using a busbar adaptor. For each busbar system, busbar adapters are supplied for distances of 40mm and 60mm between the centres of the phases. The entire EasyLine range features a robust, unified design that is user-friendly and secure with IP 30 when closed from the front and IP 20 when open.

EasyLine DIN Disconnectors have a long history, dating back to 1958 when ABB successfully launched the manually dependent operated LHB.

They are created in line with IEC 60947-3 and type tested. All pole variations come in a variety of sizes, including NH00/160A, NH1/250A, NH2/400A, and NH3/630A.
